WEST HARTFORD, CT — School officials have major plans for Wolcott Elementary School over the summer, with the local zoning board mulling an application for major security improvements. The West Hartford Plan & Zoning Commission early next month will conduct a hearing and, possibly, vote on a special permit application by the Town of West Hartford for security/site improvements at Wolcott Elementary School, 71 Wolcott Road. The PZC May 6 unanimously voted to schedule a public hearing on the application for Monday, June 3, at 7 :15 p.m. at West Hartford Town Hall, 50 S. Main St., West Hartford. According to documents submitted to the town, the plan is for a new 1,459-square-foot brick and glass addition to the main office/building entry area. The purpose is to create a new, more secure entry area to the school building and its offices, according to a project narrative. In addition to the addition, the permit also seeks approval for the school system to expand its parking area and reconfigure the school's driveway and exit way, part of a safety initiative. "To address traffic flow and circulation issues, a new drive will be created, which will run somewhat parallel to the existing drive," wrote the town in the project description. It would also create a new, safer drop-off and pickup area for parents, according to the narrative, and expand on-site parking from 78 to 114 total spaces, including to ADA-accessible spaces. Also included would be new lighting for the parking area and a reworking of water drainage and catch basins to improve drainage.
