In Ecuador, the main components of the consumer price index are: Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (25.1 percent of the total weight); Transport (13.6 percent); Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels (10.2 percent) and Clothing and Footwear (9 percent). Restaurants and Hotels account for 6.8 percent; Education for 6.78 percent; Furniture and Household Equipment for 6.1 percent and Health Care for 6 percent. Others include: Leisure and Culture (5.9 percent); Other Goods and Services (5.2 percent); Communications (4.4 percent) and Alcoholic Beverages, Tobacco and Narcotics (0.9 percent). The national index has a base of 100 as of 2004. The CPI reflects the prices and spending patterns registered in eight representative cities: Quito, Guayaquil, Cuenca, Machala, Esmeraldas, Manta, Ambato and Loja, which account for 67.44 percent of the urban population of the country.
A higher than expected figure should be seen as positive (bullish) for the USD while a lower than expected figure should be seen as negative (bearish) for the USD.
