Microsoft to invest $400 million in Swiss AI and cloud expansion

Microsoft to invest $400 million in Swiss AI and cloud expansion

Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:MSFT) is set to spend $400 million in Switzerland to boost its artificial intelligence and cloud computing infrastructure, the company announced on Monday. The investment will go towards upgrading and expanding its four existing data centres near Geneva and Zurich, allowing Microsoft to meet growing demand for AI services while keeping data within Swiss borders, a key priority for clients in finance, healthcare and the public sector. The announcement came during a meeting in Bern between Swiss Economy Minister Guy Parmelin and Microsoft vice chair Brad Smith. While job creation figures were not disclosed, the company said the move would support existing and new customers, as well as partnerships with smaller businesses. Microsoft also plans to expand training efforts to help more people adopt AI and digital tools. Smith praised Switzerland’s research and innovation ecosystem, calling it a global leader in combining science with practical application. Excellon Resources Inc (TSX:EXN, OTCQB:EXNRF) has secured up to $7.5 million from Glencore through a strategic streaming and offtake agreement, enabling the restart of its Mallay silver-lead-zinc mine in Peru by early 2026. This deal, along with a $10.5 million financing round—featuring increased investment from Eric Sprott—brings total project funding to $18 million. CEO Shawn Howarth confirmed that Glencore will act as the dedicated buyer of Mallay’s concentrate, ensuring a direct path to market. Excellon is also advancing work at its Tres Cerros and Kilgore projects. Proactive: Can you give us an update on Excellon's Mallay project? Shawn Howarth: We’ve signed a definitive agreement with Glencore for up to $7.5 million in liquidity support. This will help restart the Mallay mine in Peru by early 2026. It's a former producer with excellent infrastructure, and we’re targeting near-surface areas with remaining mineralization. What are the terms of the Glencore deal? It’s a streaming and offtake agreement. Glencore will provide funding in exchange for future silver, lead, and zinc concentrate from Mallay. Importantly, they’ll also serve as the dedicated buyer—streamlining our route to market. What’s the next step at Mallay? We plan to start a three- to five-month underground rehab program, giving us better access to the deposit. Following that, we’ll conduct drilling to improve our understanding of near-term production zones and explore the broader system. How does the $18M total financing break down? Along with Glencore’s $7.5 million, we raised $10.5 million in a concurrent offering. Notably, Eric Sprott increased his stake, which is a strong vote of confidence. Any updates on your other assets? Yes, we’re moving forward at Tres Cerros and the Kilgore gold project in Idaho. But for now, our priority is safely and quickly bringing Mallay back online.
