HAUPPAUGE, NY — A free farmers market for people 65 and older is coming to Long Island Cares, the food bank announced in partnership with PSEG Long Island. The drive is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the Long Island Cares Center for Community Engagement, at 75 Davids Drive, Hauppauge. The food bank plans to give away more than a dozen locally sourced fresh produce items, thanks to a grant from PSEG Long Island. Two Long Island Cares nutritionists will be doing cooking demonstrations and educating seniors on the value of the food the charity is giving them. "Magic happens when like-minded entities come together for the betterment of the community," Jessica Rosati, Long Island Cares vice president for programs and community services, told Patch. Rosati said the PSEG Long Island and Long Island Cares partnership is a "clear and successful example." The seniors farmers market is open to any Long Island senior in need of fresh food. The outdoor event will run rain or shine and be first-come, first-served. When seniors arrive, they provide their demographic information to Long Island Cares staff. They will then be guided to PSEG Long Island for a re-usable tote and information. They are then welcome to select items from the fresh market, Rosati said. This year, Long Island Cares will be showcasing its newest program "Farm to Truck," a mobile farmers market, during this event. The truck was made possible by a $250K grant from Bank of America. The food bank is in its fourth year facilitating community events in partnership with PSEG Long Island. "Each year, it gets larger, and better than the last," Rosati said. Michael Presti, PSEG Long Island director of customer experience and marketing, said the company is proud to partner with Long Island Cares to provide seniors and veterans in the community with hundreds of pounds of fresh produce, Thanksgiving turkeys and fixings, and other items at the six community events that PSEG Long Island sponsors. "At each event, dozens of PSEG Long Island employee-volunteers help participants shop, carry their bags, and we have customer advocates available to share information on our financial programs and money-saving tips," Presti said. "We also provide hundreds of LED lightbulbs and reusable shopping bags to hold their items. This is the third year we are partnering with Long Island Cares to support these communities, who are our neighbors and customers. Part of PSEG Long Island’s core commitments is to support our communities. Seniors are a large part of our community — our neighbors and friends. Some seniors struggle to put food on the table and pay bills. These initiatives provide support for our seniors directly where they need it." Each year, Long Island Cares ends its series with a market and resource fair. Long Island Cares stated it is dedicated to serving seniors, both where they live and at events. More than 1,500 seniors a month are served by Long Island Cares's various programs. Another farmers market and resource fair is scheduled for Aug. 6, also at the food bank's Center for Community Engagement. Patch has partnered with Feeding America since 2020 to help raise awareness in our local communities of hunger, a persistent national problem exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Feeding America, which supports 200 food banks and 60,000 local meals programs across the country, estimates that nearly 34 million people, including 9 million children — about 1 in 6 Americans — are living with food insecurity. This is a Patch social good project; Feeding America receives 100 percent of donations. Find out how you can donate in your community or find a food pantry near you.
