Overview

Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) stands as India's foremost producer of coking coal, a crucial raw material for the steel industry. The company accounted for approximately 58.5% of the nation's domestic coking coal output in FY25. Established in January 1972 as a subsidiary of Coal India Limited, BCCL is headquartered in the coal-rich region of Dhanbad, Jharkhand. The company actively operates between 32 to 34 mines, employing various extraction methods including underground, opencast, and mixed operations, primarily situated in the Jharia coalfields of Jharkhand and Raniganj coalfields of West Bengal. Additionally, BCCL manages eight coal washeries, with four more construction in progress, allowing it to transform raw coal into high-quality washed coking coal and non-coking coal. With estimated reserves of approximately 7.91 billion tonnes, representing 21.5% of India's total coking coal resources, BCCL possesses an over 100-year mining potential at current extraction rates. The company's production rose dramatically from 30.5 million tonnes in FY22 to 40.5 million tonnes in FY25, driven by mine expansions and operational efficiencies. BCCL is debt-free and cash-generative, boasting a revenue of around Rs 14,400 crore and a profit after tax of Rs 1,240 crore in FY25, thus playing a vital role in strengthening India's energy security and supporting the growth of its steel industry.
