Overview

Clarent Corporation was a trailblazer in developing advanced software-based communications solutions that leveraged Internet Protocol (IP) networks to seamlessly integrate voice, fax, and data transmission. Initially founded as NetiPhone in 1996, the company rebranded itself as Clarent Corporation in May 1997. It established its headquarters in Redwood City, California, while expanding its reach globally with additional offices across Asia, Europe, Latin America, and North America. Clarent’s innovative approach aimed at bridging the gap between the traditional circuit-switched telephone networks and emerging IP networks, offering a transparent IP telephony experience to end users on their existing telephone systems. Although Clarent made significant strides in enabling IP communication services, financial challenges led the company to file for voluntary reorganization under Chapter 11 in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of California on December 13, 2002. The reorganization eventually transitioned into a Chapter 11 liquidation, approved on April 1, 2004, marking the end of Clarent Corporation’s operations.

Products and Services

  • Software-based IP Communications Solutions:

Clarent's core offerings were centered around software that facilitated the delivery of voice, fax, and data over IP networks. This enabled service providers to offer integrated communication services using the Internet as the underlying transport mechanism, thereby significantly reducing costs and increasing the flexibility of communication networks.

  • Transition Solutions from Circuit-switched to IP Networks:

Understanding the widespread reliance on traditional telephone systems, Clarent designed solutions to bridge the transition from these circuit-switched networks to more efficient IP networks. Their technologies allowed service providers to offer IP telephony services without altering the end user's experience, essentially making the transition to IP telephony seamless for customers using their existing wireline or wireless phones.
