Horizon Kinetics Medical ETF Profile

Overview

The fund described is an active exchange-traded fund (ETF) focusing on investments within the healthcare sector, specifically targeting companies involved in medical research, pharmaceuticals, medical technology, and related technological fields. As an active ETF, it employs a strategy to dynamically allocate its assets in various equity forms such as common stocks, convertible securities, and warrants. It commits at least 80% of its net assets, along with any borrowed funds for investment purposes, to entities both in the U.S. and abroad that fit its investment criteria. Notably, this fund is classified as non-diversified, meaning it may concentrate its investments more heavily in fewer issuers than a diversified fund.

Products and Services

  • Common Stocks - The fund invests in common stocks of U.S. and foreign companies that are primarily engaged in the medical research, pharmaceutical, and medical technology sectors. This includes entities working on innovative health solutions, drug development, and medical devices.
  • Convertible Securities - These are investments in bonds, debentures, or other types of securities that can be converted into or exchanged for a predetermined amount of common stock or equity shares. This allows the fund to benefit from the fixed-income nature of the bond and the potential upside of the equity market.
  • Warrants - The fund also allocates part of its portfolio to warrants, which are derivatives that provide the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell a security—most commonly equity—at a certain price before the expiration. This can potentially enhance returns if the underlying companies perform well.
  • Equity Securities with Characteristics of Common Stocks - In addition to pure common stocks, the fund invests in equity securities that exhibit characteristics similar to common stocks. This broad category can include various forms of preferred stocks, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), or other financial instruments that offer equity participation in companies.
