News of the shareholder payout couldn't cheer investors, however, as the share fell around 9% in Friday's trade.

Shares in Smiths Group (LSE:SMIN) fell 5.9% to 2,222p on Friday after the company reported mixed half-year results and slightly trimmed full-year guidance. The company reported organic revenue growth of 4% for the six months ended 31 January 2026, with headline operating profit up 7.2% to £248 million and margins improving by 50 basis points to 17.2%.
The engineering company said it would return some of the cash from its sale of Smiths Detection via a tender offer or special dividend.
The U.K. engineering company said that the completion is expected in the second half of 2026.
Smiths Group shares opened almost 3% higher at 2,494p this morning after the engineering group agreed to sell its security screening division, Smiths Detection, to funds advised by CVC Capital Partners for £2 billion. The deal values the business at 16.3 times its most recent annual operating profit of £122 million and 12.5 times EBITDA of £160 million for the year to the end of July 2025.
UK's Smiths Group said on Wednesday it will sell its Smiths Detection unit, known for its baggage-screening kit in airports and explosive detectors, for 2 billion pounds ($2.65 billion), including debt, to private equity firm CVC Capital.
