Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have driven oil up nearly 4%, raising concerns over energy supply disruptions. Strategy (MSTR) appears to have resumed Bitcoin accumulation after a two-month pause, following significant balance sheet maneuvers.
Strategy Inc. MSTR (formerly known as Microstrategy) shares rose more than 12% on Thursday as Bitcoin broke above the $80,000 level, lifting investor sentiment toward the company, which is often viewed as a leveraged equity proxy for the cryptocurrency because of its large Bitcoin holdings. The Nasdaq Composite was up 1.5%, while the S&P 500 gained 0.81%.
Bitcoin appears to have bottomed as I expected when I covered Strategy, but I missed the smaller treasury company that outperformed it. I think Strive is better, short-term. Three mechanics favor Strive in my view: an effective common capitalization of only ~$1.9 billion, SATA holding its $100 par, and a short interest near 30% of float. Strategy is currently issuing common shares to defend STRC below par rather than to add coins, so its Bitcoin per share has been falling while Strive's has been rising.
