Ballast Small/Mid Cap ETF is marketed as a small/mid-cap ETF, but 70% of its components have market caps below $3 billion, making it closer to a micro-cap play. A big drawback is the MGMT's 1.10% expense ratio. Like dividends, these fees compound, making it increasingly more difficult for long-term investors to justify the extra cost. However, I'm impressed with MGMT's quality features. Ballast's screening process for management teams is qualitative, but quantitatively, it's solid too, with 14% weighted average net margins and ROE.

The fund described focuses on investment primarily in equity securities, specifically common stocks, of domestic companies that have small to medium market capitalizations. This strategy suggests an objective to foster growth by capitalizing on the potential of these companies. Additionally, the fund prioritizes flexibility in its investment approach. It allows for a significant portion of its assets to be allocated towards cash and cash equivalents, including money market funds and other short-term fixed income investments. This is a strategic move to protect the principal investment during volatile market conditions or when satisfactory investment opportunities are not available. The decision to shift assets is based on the Adviser's assessment of the market and investment landscape.
This product focuses on investing a minimum of 80% of the fund's net assets, plus any borrowings for investment purposes, in equity securities, primarily common stocks. The investments target domestic companies that are categorized under small to medium market capitalizations. This strategy is designed to capitalize on the growth potential of these companies, offering investors the opportunity to benefit from their expansion and success.
In scenarios where market conditions are not favorable, or there are insufficient suitable investment opportunities, the fund has the flexibility to allocate all or a substantial portion of its assets into cash and cash equivalents. This category includes money market funds and other short-term fixed income investments. The primary objective of this strategy is to safeguard the fund's principal, providing a secure, albeit potentially less lucrative, holding pattern until more promising investment opportunities arise.
