Phone-Based Frauds Allow Scammers to Engage with Victims More PersonallyCAMBRIDGE, MA / ACCESSWIRE / May 20, 2024 / The APWG's new Phishing Activity Trends Report reveals that phishing attacks using phone calls and text messages have grown unchecked for the past two years, shifting the cybercrime threatscape increasingly toward abuse of telephone services and infrastructure. Phone numbers used for fraud represented more than 20 percent of all fraud-related assets that APWG member OpSec identified in Q1 2024.Phone Numbers as a Percent of Total Fraud Assets Detected - Q1 2024 Phone Numbers as a Percent of Total Fraud Assets Detected - Q1 2024. Source: OpSecScammers are markedly and steadily expanding their deployment of vishing - where fraudsters call potential victims, and smishing - where fraudsters advertise the URLs of phishing sites in SMS and text messages. And in hybrid phishing a phisher sends an email or text that requests that the recipient call a phone number. This allows a scammer to talk directly with potential victims and manipulate them first-hand."At OpSec, we started to see vishing and smishing take off in early 2021," said Matthew Harris, Senior Product Manager, Fraud at OpSec, and a long-time APWG report contributor. "Phishing that uses email lures is being hampered by advanced filtering technologies and sending requirements, making it more difficult for scammers to get their emails into victim in-boxes. Contrast this with phone calls, which go directly to a user with very little filtering," said Harris. "Phone calls are more engaging. A live person is calling the victim, interacting with them, and has a chance to gain the victim's trust-or has a chance to alarm and confuse the victim and trick them."APWG contributing member Fortra has observed something similar in recent years. "Hybrid vishing, which we rarely saw before 2023, made up 5.6 percent of Fortra's engagements in the first quarter of 2024," said John Wilson, Senior Fellow, Threat Research at Fortra."The hybrid vishing attacks we track typically begin as an email indicating the recipient has been charged for a product or service," said Wilson. "The messages instruct the recipient to call a phone number if they wish to cancel their order and obtain a refund. Norton/LifeLock was the most popular brand used as a lure in these attacks, mentioned in 32 percent of the hybrid vishing messages we encountered in Q1 2024."The report also reveals that in Q1 2024, APWG observed 963,994 phishing attacks. After highs in early 2023, the number of attacks per month has been stable from June 2023 through March 2024. Social media platforms were the most frequently attacked sector in Q1 2024, targeted by 37.4 percent of all phishing attacks, followed by software-as-a-service and webmail companies, at 21 percent. Phishing against the banking segment continued to fall, down to 9.8 percent in Q1 2024.APWG's assessment is that the availability of high-fidelity voice and video samples on the Web, intimate personal information on social media, and personal financial data sold in dark-web markets will make it increasingly easier for cybergangs to use AI to create uniquely potent scams."Ours is a new epoch in cybercrime's evolution. Technologies that would have been science fiction when phishing initially besieged bank brands 20 years ago are now readily available to cybercrime gangs - and they have the wherewithal and expertise to use them for undetectable spoofs," said APWG Secretary General Peter Cassidy. "Consumers and employees everywhere need to ask themselves: just who do you think you're talking/texting to?"The full text of the report is available here: Click Here ContactsFor media inquiries related to the APWG, please contact APWG Secretary General Peter Cassidy ([email protected], +1.617.669.1123). SpaceX CEO Elon Musk met with Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe during his visit to Indonesia over the weekend, in what the President termed a “fruitful discussion.” What Happened: Wickremesinghe was on an official visit to Indonesia for the 10th World Water Forum and Musk was there to launch SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet services in the country. The two met and had a fruitful discussion, the President said. “We had a fruitful discussion on a variety of interesting topics. Starlink's expansion could be particularly transformative for countries like Sri Lanka, providing a lifeline to essential services and information,” Wickremesinghe wrote. “It was an honor to meet,” Musk responded, while adding that it was a “good meeting.” Sri Lanka is among the many countries where Starlink is expected to “come soon,” as per SpaceX. In Southeast Asia, Starlink services are currently available in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Starlink is currently available in 99 countries, territories, or markets around the globe. Why It Matters: On Sunday, Musk along with Indonesian Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin, introduced the Starlink service for the nation's health sector. The service was reportedly launched at three Indonesian health centers, including two in Bali and one on the remote island of Aru in Maluku. It is the billionaire entrepreneur’s first in-person visit to the country. "Bringing connectivity to remote communities radically improves access to education and economic opportunities,” Musk said about the launch. May 20 (Reuters) - Russia China's top oil supplier in April for a 12th month, with volumes rising 30% from a year earlier, official data showed, as refiners continued to cash in discounted shipments, while supplies from Saudi Arabia fell a quarter on higher prices. China's crude oil imports from Russia, which include supplies sent via pipelines and the sea, were 9.26 million metric tons last month, or 2.25 million barrels per day (bpd), according to data from the General Administration of Customs. That is down from March's 2.55 million bpd and the record in June 2023 of 2.56 million bpd. In April, Russia cut its crude supply by 150,000 bpd to 9.3 million bpd, according to the IEA's monthly oil market report. That was still 200,000 bpd above the production target it agreed to with other major producers Imports from Saudi Arabia, which was last China's biggest supplier in April 2023, were 6.34 million tons, or 1.54 million bpd, down 25% from a year earlier. The kingdom had raised its April selling price for oil to Asia to $1.70 a barrel above the Oman/Dubai average, up from $1.50 previously. Imports from Malaysia, a key transhipment hub for oil from Iran and Venezuela, held largely steady year-on-year at about 980,000 bpd. A U.S. official appeared to raise some concerns about the transhipments during a visit to Singapore and Malaysia this month by noting that Iran's capacity to move its oil is reliant on service providers based in Malaysia, with oil being transferred near Singapore and throughout the region. Monday's data also recorded 0.19 million tons of imports from Venezuela, taking the year-to-date volume to 0.92 million tons, or 55,000 bpd, amid a temporary relaxation of U.S. sanctions on Caracas. Sanctions were re-imposed last month after the U.S. said President Nicolas Maduro had failed to meet election commitments.
