Beaten-down rental stocks are bouncing while the wider transportation sector slips, and Hertz Global Holdings (NASDAQ:HTZ) is leading the rebound from the deepest hole in the group. Hertz stock is at $2.
Stocks with high short interest are a dime a dozen; the question is whether shorts can cover quickly, which is indicated by days to cover. Days to cover measures how many days at average volume it would take short sellers to close out 100% of their positions; the higher it is, the better (if you are looking for a squeeze), and above five is generally good.
Hertz Global shares have fallen sharply since my most recent article; however, I remain bearish. I believe the firm's June profit warning invalidated last year's bullish thesis and highlights the company's balance sheet strain. Credit rating agency actions and the price of HTZ bonds further add to these worries.
