Nutley Property Taxes Will Rise Under New School Budget
NUTLEY, NJ — Nutley homeowners will see a 5.26 percent increase to the school portion of their property taxes under the district’s latest budget, which passed a vote from the board of education on Thursday. It has been a tough budget season for school administrators in Nutley, who have been facing public criticism over a looming, multi-million dollar shortfall that will require belt-tightening across the district. The Nutley Board of Education held a public hearing on May 7, which included four resolutions related to the proposed 2024-2025 spending plan. Board members ended up tabling a vote on those resolutions to their next meeting. After the May 7 meeting, district administrators released their budget presentation to the public. As part of the presentation, administrators noted that the budget – which still had to be reviewed by the district’s new state monitor – will mean a 5.26 percent tax increase for local homeowners. Property taxes in New Jersey are mainly made up of three parts: school, municipal and county. The local school budget represented about half of that total in Nutley last year, data shows. During the public comment portion of the meeting, several Nutley parents and community members railed against cuts that will come with the budget, and said they’re worried about the loss of beloved teachers and other staff members.
